David LaChapelle was born in Connecticut in 1963. Not yet out of High School, he was offered his first professional job by Andy Warhol to shoot for Interview Magazine. Since the nineties his striking images have appeared on and in between the covers of magazines such as Paris Vogue, The Face, DETAILS, Vanity Fair, New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone. In 1997 he won the "Art Directors Award" for the best book and best graphic design. LaChapelle's images, both bizarre and gorgeous, have forged a singular style that is unique, original, perfectly unmistakable, and often imitated. He has photographed a diverse collection of the world's most influential cultural personalities. In 1995 he was recognized as the photographer of the Year by the Photo and American Photo Magazine. In 1998 he won the "Alfred Eisenstandt Awards" for the "the most interesting photographic style". He published: LaChapelle Land in 1996, and Hotel LaChapelle in 1998. In 2006, with Taschen he published the limited edition book Artist and Prostitutes and Heaven to Hell, which has already been put into multiple printings.
His work has had the power to cross cultures and genres and has been embraced by the international community in international publications and most recently with solo museum exhibitions throughout Europe and South America. His latest series of work, The Deluge and Awakened, was critically acclaimed and widely praised in the public as well as the art community.
