Fred Torres Collaborations and Dear Dave, Magazine present a conversation between David LaChapelle and Lyle Rexer at the School of Visual Arts Theatre. This event coincides with David LaChapelle's current exhibition, Earth Laughs in Flowers on view through March 24th at Fred Torres Collaborations. The exhibition features LaChapelle's entire series of ten large-scale still life photographs being shown for the first time in the United States.
Born in 1963, David LaChapelle studied visual arts at the North Carolina School of the Arts, the Art Students League and the School of Visual Arts in New York. His photography career began in the 1980s showing his artwork in New York City galleries. LaChapelle's works caught the eye of Andy Warhol and the editors of Interview, who invited him to contribute to the magazine. Recent solo museum exhibitions include Galerie Rudolfinum in Prague, Seoul Arts Center Hangaram Design Museum, and the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Puerto Rico.
Lyle Rexer holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from Columbia University. He is the author of several books, including How to Look at Outsider Art (2005) and The Edge of Vision: The Rise of Abstraction in Photography (2009). Rexer contributes to a variety of publications, including The New York Times, Art in America, Aperture, and Tate, etc. He has curated internationally, including Fernando Canovas at the Institut Valencia d'Art Modern and The Edge of Vision, for Aperture. Lyle Rexer teaches at SVA in New York and is a columnist for Photograph Magazine.
